Dramatic popularity of automobiles in the 1910’s created modern innovations like front engine rear-wheel drive, independent suspension, four-wheel brakes, transmissions, and electric self-starters. Internal combustion engines eventually prevailed over steam and electric, the first Indianapolis was held in 1911, passenger car sales surpassed 1.5 million in 1915, and in 1918 the first tri-colored stop light appears in Detroit, Michigan.
